How we sized them up
This is a research-only guide. We did not hands-on test these pumps. The shortlist follows the consensus of published expert reviews from Wirecutter, BabyGearLab and What to Expect, and every specification below comes from the manufacturer or the retailer listing for that model. Pros and cons are drawn from those published reviews.
Every product in this guide was checked against the CPSC recall database and FDA recall records on October 25, 2026. No pump listed here has an active recall or a CPSC safety warning.
Breast pumps are personal medical devices, and flange fit matters. A flange that matches your measurement will usually matter more than a small difference in stated suction between two pumps. Most brands publish a sizing guide, and several include a measuring tool in the box.
Suction figures are stated exactly as each manufacturer states them. Brands measure under different conditions, so use each figure as a guide to that pump’s own range.

Who it’s forThe S1 Plus is the default first pump in most expert roundups, and it has held the Wirecutter top pick spot for several years. Vacuum and cycle speed adjust separately in both massage and expression modes, so a session can be tuned in small steps. The built-in rechargeable battery covers pumping away from an outlet, and the backflow protectors keep milk out of the tubing. A night light and a session timer are built in.

Who it’s forThe S2 Plus runs the same pumping system as the S1 Plus: separate vacuum and cycle controls, massage and expression modes, backflow protectors, a night light and a timer. The difference is power. The S2 Plus plugs into a wall outlet and has no internal battery, which suits a fixed pumping spot at home. It is also the Spectra model many insurance plans supply as the standard pump.

haakaa Gen. 2 Silicone Breast Pump with Suction Base and Lid, 4 oz
ASIN B07G43F123
Product image: Amazon product media.
Who it’s forThe haakaa is one piece of silicone with no handle, motor or parts to assemble. You squeeze the base, place it over the breast, and release to hold suction. Parents commonly use it on the opposite side during a feed to collect letdown, and it also works as a simple manual pump for occasional sessions. The Gen. 2 version adds a suction base that grips a flat surface, and this listing includes a silicone lid.
Specifications
Type

Silent, with no power source
Cons
Suction strength depends on how much air you squeeze out, so control is coarse
Small 4 oz capacity
Suction holds one position; it cycles only when you squeeze it again
Match the pump to how often you plan to pump and where the sessions will happen.
Style of pump
Double-electric pumps handle daily and exclusive pumping schedules. Wearable pumps trade some of that structure for freedom to move during a session. Manual pumps cover occasional sessions, travel and power outages, and they make a practical backup beside an electric pump.
Flange fit
Measure before you order and compare the result with the sizes in the box. The Lansinoh Smartpump 3.0 includes three sizes. The Spectra pumps and the Willow Go include two sizes. The wearable pumps from Elvie and Momcozy include one size, with inserts and alternate sizes sold separately. A lactation consultant can also check fit in person.
Power and replacement parts
Decide whether a rechargeable battery matters for your routine; the Spectra S2 Plus and the plug-in side of the Medela kit depend on an outlet or a battery pack. Valves, membranes and diaphragms wear out and change how a pump feels, so check that replacement parts for your model are easy to order before you need them. Many US insurance plans cover a double-electric pump, so check your plan before paying out of pocket.
Specifications are based on published manufacturer and retailer information for the listed models. Check the current product listing for package contents and compatibility before ordering.
